Mode and Physiological Consequence of Aal-Toxin Interaction with the asc Locus in Tomato

ABSTRACT

The Alternaria stem canker disease of tomato, caused by Alternaria alternata f.sp. lycopersici, is regulated by the asc locus in the host plant (Clouse,1987). Based on analysis of representatives of 9 plant families, the host range of the pathogen is limited to tomato and to specific genotypes of tomato (Gilchrist, 1976). The pathogen also produces phytotoxic metabolites (AAL-toxins), both in liquid culture and in naturally infected plants which play an important role in development of the disease on susceptible genotypes of tomato (Gilchrist,1976; Si1er, 1983). The AAL-toxins are not toxic to plants other than tomato, they are not produced by nonpathogenic A. alternata (Gilchrist,1976) nor, until recently, were they known to be produced by any other organism.
