TITLE

The Concept of Holistic Rehabilitation of Persons with Aphasia

ABSTRACT

The concept of holistic rehabilitation of patients with aphasia is presented in this chapter. First, some information on the history of aphasia therapy in Poland is presented. Next, principles of assessment are discussed. Then, the theoretical framework of holistic rehabilitation is given, with emphasis on a model for aphasia therapy called the Complex Aphasia Rehabilitation Model (CARM) (Pachalska, 1986a). Methods for both individuals and groups, focused on the stimulation and training of language functions, cognitive functions, and communication in general are discussed. Finally, the efficacy of the treatment is shown. It is emphasized that the primary goal of holistic rehabilitation of an aphasic person is the restoration of his or her effective communication, as well as the fullest possible reintegration into society.
