ABSTRACT

World War II has been edging out World War I in British classrooms where the study of themes provides the core of the work. Ageing adults have been cross-questioned, fathers faced with the old challenge, “what didyou do in the war, Daddy?” and previously unsung heroes have willingly reminisced into tape-recorders, provided souvenirs for exhibitions, or anecdotes for essays. A recent spate of novels, which David James discusses in this article, offer young readers a range of insights into the period.
