ABSTRACT

Interaction between sequentially presented vibrotactile patterns was measured both in a discrimination task and in a temporal masking paradigm. The vibrotactfle patterns were generated on an array of stimulators, 6 columns × 24 rows, in contact with the subjects’ fingertips. As the time between pairs of patterns presented to one fingertip was increased, performance in discriminating whether the two patterns were the same or different improved. When one member of the pair was presented to one finger and the other to a second finger, discrimination performance first declined slightly then improved as temporal separation increased. Performance on pattern recognition in the presence of either a forward or backward masker improved as the temporal separation between the target and masker increased. In both the discrimination and masking measurements, the time between the onsets of the two patterns (stimulus onset asynchrony) was found to be the best measure of interaction between the sequentially presented patterns. The implications of these findings for vibrotactile pattern processing are discussed. More... »
