ABSTRACTThe constitutive, lipid-dependent protein kinase activity of purified protein kinase C (PKC) delayed the realization that phosphorylation of the PKCs themselves played a fundamental role in their catalytic activities. With the clarity of hindsight, it is evident that the proteins originally purified from tissue sources and indeed those recombinant proteins derived from baculovirus infection of insect cells were already highly phosphorylated (1).
