ABSTRACT

The S100 protein family has grown from originally two members (S100A1 and S100B) (1) to one of the largest subfamilies of EF-hand Ca2+-binding proteins, consisting now of 18 members displaying a diverse pattern of cell- and tissue-specific distribution, subcellular expression, and relocation upon Ca2+ stimulation (2 7). Their pleiotropic intra- and extracellular functions are consistent with their distinct affinities for Ca2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+, their binding to diverse target proteins, and different post-translational modifications.
