ABSTRACT

The interaction of ZnCl2 with clay minerals (kaolinite and smectite) was studied by the method of scanning electron microscopy. It was shown that the changes in the water sorption properties of kaolinite and smectite after saturation with a 1 N ZnCl2 solution were related not only to the effect of the residual salts but also to the changes in the mineral particle organization due to the formation of outer-sphere complexes of zinc cations with the aluminum silicate matrix of the mineral.
