ABSTRACT

—Nanoscale CdS:Nd3+, ZnS:Nd3+, and (Cd,Zn)S:Nd3+ particles have been synthesized and doped in a polymerizing methyl methacrylate medium during the production of optically transparent polyacrylate composites PMMA/CdS:Nd3+, PMMA/ZnS:Nd3+, and PMMA/(Cd,Zn)S:Nd3+. The photoluminescence (FL) excitation and the FL of semiconductor structures in a polyacrylate matrix is associated with the transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band and to the levels of structural defects of particles followed by the recombination at these levels. On the basis of changes in the FL excitation spectra and the FL of composites, hypotheses are made about the structures of particles, the distribution of Nd3+ ions in ithem, and their effects on photoluminescence.
