ABSTRACT

For timing of endogenous events in the Kharbei metamorphic complex (Polar Urals), U–Pb isotopic dating of zircons from garnet–clinozoisite–twomica metaplagiogranite was carried out using laser ablation and magnetic sector mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (LA-SF-ICP-MS). In terms of the petrogeochemical composition, the rock from which the zircons were dated corresponds to normal-alkaline meta-alumina granite that underwent progressive metamorphism under conditions of elevated-pressure epidote–amphibolite facies. The concordant age of 77 analyzed magmatic zircon crystals was 463 ± 1 Ma at MSWD of 1.02. The weighted average 206Pb/238U isotopic age corrected for common lead by the 207Pb method was 464 ± 1 Ma. Given that the Kharbei metamorphic complex represents the basement of the paleocontinental sector of the Urals, the results obtained confirm that endogenous activity associated with long-lived rifts existed in the northeastern margin of the East European paleocontinent until the Middle Ordovician.
