ABSTRACT

Owing to new information technologies, including the use of search engines and network traffic scanning, researchers can now carry out detailed measurements in the economics of intellectual property. The obtained results refute a number of myths that have become a commonplace in economic literature, primarily in publications dedicated to intangible asset management, innovations, and research productivity. This article shows that many difficulties arising during the assessment of intellectual property rights and their accounting within intangible assets are related to a fundamental algebraic property of information, the idempotence of its addition. At the level of bits, this property manifests itself in the fact that “yes” and another “yes” means “yes” and nothing else. However, in the economics of intellectual property, this algebraic property has numerous consequences that should not be ignored. More... »
