ABSTRACT

The effect of aluminum cations adsorbed on the surface of silica SiO2 on the physicomechanical properties and structure of polymeric composite materials based on polytetrafluoroethylene is studied. It is shown that the treatment of silica with aluminum chloride solution at concentrations in the range from 10–4 to 10–1 mol/L enhances the stress-strain characteristics of the composite compared with the composite containing the same amount of the untreated silica. An increase in the concentration of AlCl3 solution is accompanied by a rise in the concentration of adsorbed aluminum ions on the filler surface; as a result, the density and tensile strength of the composite decrease while the relative elongation at break increases. Using scanning electron microscopy it is shown that aluminum cations adsorbed on the silica surface are responsible for formation of a more ordered supramolecular structure of the composite material based on polytetrafluoroethylene. Even a small concentration of aluminum cations considerably changes the structure of the composite and improves its performance properties compared with the samples filled with silica with the untreated surface.
