ABSTRACT

Experimental data are reported on the kinetics and mechanism of methane-air combustion in a closed space at atmospheric pressure and on the effects of inhibitor admixtures and inert gases. Ignition arises and develops as a result of a chain avalanche occurring in the mixture, and self-heating is significant only in developing chain combustion. Admixtures containing propene or isobutene and carbon dioxide (5% olefin + 20% CO2) efficiently prevent the ignition and combustion of methane-air mixtures of any composition. More... »
