ABSTRACT

In irradiation experiments on mouse spermatocyte meiosis, the dose of 200 R completely blocks the process of meiosis, if given to spermatocytes during the short period of condensation from the diffuse stage to metaphase I, but does not seem to have this effect if given to spermatocytes at the diffuse stage. Even after a dose of 1000 R, given during the diffuse stage, in spite of the great damage to the tissue, the chromosomes have a tendency to recontract into separate bivalents, though with a somewhat damaged appearance. These results are compared with our previous observations on irradiated meiosis of the grasshopper Stethophyma grossa. The differences are explained by the different structures observed in the meiotic chromosomes of mouse and grasshopper, respectively. More... »
