ABSTRACT

As technologies develop and expand, they tend to need accompanying organisations, regulations and codes of conduct to ensure optimally high-quality services. Over the past four decades, there have been enormous developments in the use of information technology, particularly in terms of the Internet and the World Wide Web. These changes have affected health information and healthcare substantially, and patients are benefitting considerably as a result. This chapter therefore explores not only this recent history, but also a number of contemporary changes that are about to affect the field of health even more, including m Health, serious gaming and information standardisation. It then examines how the growth of the Internet has been closely associated with the establishment of the Health on the Net Foundation (HON) and its code. As the future of the Internet becomes more complex, so too HON is changing in different ways; this chapter outlines these exciting organisational and technical developments. More... »
