ABSTRACT

Expression of anti-inflammatory IL-10 in adult neural stem cells could improve the ability of implanted cells to treat autoimmune encephalitis and MS. In a mouse model of experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE), implantation of IL-10-expressing adult neural stem cells reduced disease severity compared with implantation of neural stem cells expressing a control vector (p<0.05). In mice, spinal cord neurons that received the IL-10-expressing adult neural stem cells showed greater remyelination of axons than spinal cord neurons that received control neural stem cells (p<0.05). Next steps could include evaluating IL-10-expressing neural stem cells in models of other inflammation-associated neurodegenerative diseases. More... »
