ABSTRACT

DURING the past ten years, splat quenching techniques have been widely used to freeze a now substantial number of metallic and semi-metallic alloys into a glassy form1. Until recently, however, attempts to liquid-quench metallic or semi-metallic pure elements into a glassy state had been unsuccessful. Recent work, in which cooling rates estimated to be in excess of 1010 K s-1 were achieved in the 1000 Å thick regions at the edges of quenched foils, resulted in the formation of noncrystalline phases in pure germanium and tellurium2. This then raised the question of whether any of the metallic close-packed elements could also be quenched to a glassy state. More... »
