ABSTRACT

THE X-ray diffraction pattern of vertebrate skeletal muscle contains a meridional reflexion at 442 Å which has been attributed to an unknown component of the thick filament with a periodicity different from that of the myosin structure1,2. Using a new approach combining immunological and X-ray diffraction techniques, we have found that C-protein, a recently discovered myofibrillar protein located in the thick filaments3–5, contributes to the 442 Å reflexion. We interpret the X-ray data in a new way, and suggest that C-protein and myosin may have the same periodicity in the thick filament. More... »
