ABSTRACT

The chloroplast gene coding for the large subunit of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase in Zea mays has been sequenced. It contains neither a ‘classical’ prokaryotic promoter sequence nor its proposed eukaryotic counterpart but does have a typical prokaryotic ribosome binding site close to the site at which translation is initiated. Almost all possible codons occur and are translated by the ‘universal code’ rather than by the variation of it found in mitochondria. More... »
