ABSTRACT

PROLONGED exposure of receptors to ligands can result in a reduction in the number of available binding sites1–8. This constitutes one possible homeostatic mechanism in the control of interneural communication as there is a functional desensitisation of target tissues. The association between transmission-linked events and the extent of ligand binding can be investigated conveniently in synaptosome preparations. Here we present evidence for what may be a similar desensitisation phenomenon for pre- or postsynaptic muscarinic acetylcholine receptors on synaptosomal membranes as a result of depolarisation mediated via prolonged or persistent opening of sodium channels.
