ABSTRACT

THE adrenal glucocorticoids have been shown to be involved in the regulation of cyclic AMP activated metabolic processes such as lipolysis1, glycogenolysis2 and gluconeogenesis3. The role of the glucocorticoids in the regulation of these processes has been termed “permissive”4 since it enables the maintenance of the normal responsiveness of cells to hormones which act through cyclic AMP. Glucagon is known to activate the gluconeogenic pathway of mammalian liver at several sites5 including amino acid transport6. We have studied the hormonal regulation of amino acid transport in rat liver parenchymal cells maintained in culture and report here that the synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone, has a “permissive” effect on the glucagon induction of amino acid transport in hepatocytes.
