NEUROPHYSIOLOGISTS frequently use various drugs and toxins to interfere with specific membrane mechanisms. A genetic approach can achieve the same results. In taking this approach to the problem of excitation it is desirable to have an organism, like Paramecium, on which both formal genetic1 and orthodox electrophysiological2 studies can be made.
