ABSTRACT

HYBRIDS between two distinct differentiated cell types usually do not express the differentiated characteristics of either parental cell. The synthesis of enzymes necessary for the metabolism of the cell continues, while the synthesis of specialized products of differentiation often is suppressed1. Mouse myeloma cells, after fusion with mouse fibroblasts, follow this pattern ; that is, the hybrid cells cease synthesis of immunoglobulin2,3. A myeloma × lymphoma hybrid, however, continues secretion of immunoglobulin4,5. We report here the isolation of a hybrid clone, resulting from fusion of mouse myeloma cells secreting immunoglobulin of known specificity and human peripheral blood lymphocytes not secreting detectable immunoglobulin. The hybrid cells continue secretion of mouse immunoglobulin and initiate synthesis and secretion of human immunoglobulin. More... »
