ABSTRACT

Gledhill and Casida1 reported the occurrence in soils of branched, filamentous, catalase negative, cytochrome deficient bacteria for which they proposed a new genus Agromyces in the order Actinomycetales. These bacteria had a predominantly oxidative metabolism and produced little or no H2O2. In our opinion, however, the data suggest the presence of a cytochrome electron transport system. Gledhill and Casida1 deduced its absence from a negative finding in the benzidine test, but in our experience this test is not always sufficiently sensitive to detect cytochromes, especially in the absence of catalase. We have re-examined the strain Agromyces ramnosus ATCC 25173 for the presence of cytochromes using a spectrophotometric procedure. More... »
