AUTHORS ABSTRACTTHERE have been many attempts to adapt influenza virus to growth at lower temperatures. For many viruses such as polio1–3, Japanese oncephalitis4 and measles5, a relationship has been observed between virulence and the ability to grow at lower temperatures, and this has been used in the selection of attenuated variants.
