ABSTRACT

The results of irradiation with an 18 MeV rotating gamma-ray setup and three variants of equipment for proton beam transport – horizontal beam, rotating universal GANTRI, and a planar system with irradiation direction limited to ±45° to the horizontal – are compared. The average values of three parameters averaged over the target size and position are obtained for each type of equipment – the fraction of the total dose that strikes the target, the ratio of the average (specific) irradiation dose to healthy tissue to the dose in the target, and the ratio of these quantities. Comparing the results shows that it is desirable to adopt simple planar systems in proton and ion therapy. More... »
