ABSTRACT

Purpose of Review The experience of both homelessness and criminal justice involvement can impact several biopsychosocial factors among veterans. Indeed, veterans experiencing homelessness and justice involvement often have complex clinical presentations requiring referral to and engagement in myriad health and social services. Nonetheless, several factors can impact these veterans’ engagement in such services.Recent FindingsWe briefly review the literature regarding health conditions and psychosocial stressors commonly experienced by this population.SummaryBased on this, we propose the utility of a holistic, biopsychosocial model for conceptualizing care for these veterans. Based on this model, we provide methods of tailoring and enhancing service delivery based on such factors. In particular, the utility of interdisciplinary care, especially between several service delivery settings and within Veterans Health Administration and community-based settings, is discussed. We conclude by reviewing additional considerations in need of further research and understanding to better inform how our field can best optimize care for this at-risk subset of the veteran population. 16 schema:description Purpose of Review The experience of both homelessness and criminal justice involvement can impact several biopsychosocial factors among veterans.
