ABSTRACT

A new approach entropy theory is used to measure flow in Sambalpur distributary, Odisha, India. Acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) is applied in this study, over the entire length of canal to quantity velocity at innumerable cross sections of canal directly. A constant ratio between the average and peak of velocities is found for entire length of canal with the help of Chiu’s equation. From velocity profile, the location of extreme velocity is determined for cross section and then applying constant ratio, the mean velocity for that section is obtained. This method is used for the entire stretch of canal. Discharge at a specified segment is intended by considering the cross-sectional area and average velocity of the flow. Here entropy perception has been employed to find out extreme velocity. Accuracy was substantiated for 14 sets of data composed at several sections of canal (including diversions), which are measured with ADV. Assessment is made between the velocity obtained from direct measurement and velocity obtained from Chiu’s equation. The result indicates high correlation among both the values obtained from both methods. Therefore, it can be concluded that Chiu’s equation is useful to determine the discharge without involving more men power, expensive field measurement in canals in an economical way with high accuracy.
