ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to carry out the phytochemical screening, antibacterial activity in different solvent extracts against neonatal sepsis causing bacteria and identification of active compounds present in aqueous extract of Punica granatum peel. The phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoids, terpenoids, tannins, steroids and saponins in all solvent extracts. However, except in aqueous extract alkaloid, coumarins and quinones were present in all organic solvent extracts. Antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion method at different concentrations showed a concentration-dependent zone of inhibition against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Among the identified compounds by HPLC/LC–MS analysis, a total of 23 compounds were reported in this study, and out of them, 17 compounds were found in P. granatum as per previous literature and five compounds were not described. Thus, the result indicates that aqueous extract of P. granatum peel contains different phytochemicals and presence of these bioactive compounds exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
