ABSTRACT

Densities ρ, sound velocities u, viscosities η, and refractive indices nD of 1,4-dioxane + (C1–C10) alkan-1-ols binary liquid mixtures have been measured at 298.15 K as a function of mole fraction by using vibrating-tube digital densimeter, multifrequency ultrasonic interferometer, Ubbelohde-type capillary viscometer and digital refractometer, respectively. From these experimental data, excess molar volumes VmE, excess molar isentropic compressibility Ks,mE, deviation in viscosity ∆η, refractive index ∆nD, excess Gibbs free energy of activation GE of viscous flow, and Grunberg and Nissan parameter d, have been obtained over the whole mole fraction range. The excess properties have been correlated using a Redlich–Kister type equation to obtain their coefficients and standard deviations. These parameters have been discussed in terms of the nature of various molecular interactions and structural effects due to the components of binary mixtures. The effect of increasing complexity of chain length of alkan-1-ols on excess properties has also been discussed. More... »
