ABSTRACT

Magnetic resonance technologies, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are powerful tools used in various fields of science. In this review, we provide a broad overview of the application of magnetic resonance technologies in aquatic biology following brief descriptions of their principles and characteristics. The topics covered include in vitro and in vivo NMR spectroscopy, NMR metabolomics, MRI, and their application to seafood science. Special attention is paid to in vivo NMR spectroscopy and metabolic tracing using a stable isotope, 13C, which provide safe and effective means of exploring the metabolic diversity of aquatic organisms. 159 schema:description Magnetic resonance technologies, such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are powerful tools used in various fields of science. In this review, we provide a broad overview of the application of magnetic resonance technologies in aquatic biology following brief descriptions of their principles and characteristics. The topics covered include in vitro and in vivo NMR spectroscopy, NMR metabolomics, MRI, and their application to seafood science. Special attention is paid to in vivo NMR spectroscopy and metabolic tracing using a stable isotope, 13C, which provide safe and effective means of exploring the metabolic diversity of aquatic organisms.
