ABSTRACT

Placebo and nocebo refer to the positive and negative psychological effects that occur after the administration of an inert substance or a sham procedure. Placebo responses are extremely variable among individuals; similarly, questions may arise about the link between the type of treatment and the placebo response as more costly or invasive interventions are associated with higher expectations. Thus, the way of considering placebo effects is important, particularly when the question addresses the placebo response as the result of a kind of “vacuum”, that is a response to the absence of a treatment, of an active substance, or that of “fullness”, that is a response that includes the individuals and their interactions, and considering their representations, their expectations and their prior experiences.
