ABSTRACT

Pb crystallites have been equilibrated on an Al (100) single-crystal substrate in ultrahigh vacuum at 590 K. The contact angle Pb crystallites has been measured to be 41.1±0.8 deg. Auger electron spectroscopy shows that 1.77 monolayers (MLs) of Pb are adsorbed on the Al substrate. By using a multilayer surface-adsorption model to distribute the adsorbed Pb among the near-surface layers of Al, it has been possible to correct the surface energy of the Al for Pb adsorption by means of the Gibbs adsorption isotherm. This corrected surface energy, together with the surface energy of pure Pb, and the measured contact angle yield an energy of 330±40 mJ/m2 for the Pb/Al (100) interface. More... »
