ABSTRACT

IntroductionThe objective of this work was to review the literature on the issue of sanitation in schools and the urogynecological impact of avoidance behaviours in girls.MethodsWe performed a literature review on Medline and Embase using the following keywords: Toilets; squat toilet; toilet; greek squat toilet; public toilets; public lavatories; public conveniences; urinal; restroom; public restroom; lavatory; plastic toilet seat; dry toilet; wet toilet; urogynecology; urinary incontinence; incontinence; urgency; urinary infection.ResultsMany French and European studies show that the cleanliness of the lavatories in schools is not satisfactory, which result in avoidance behaviors. Girls often take half squat position (halfway up) to avoid sitting on the toilet. Some studies have shown that this position reduces the urinary flow and may cause an increase in the post-residual urine. Concerning anorectal pathophysiology, it is also known that never using the toilets in the school is a risk factor for chronic constipation. One major problem is that these disturbances of urinary and anorectal physiology occur during the learning phase of continence.ConclusionIt is clear that the cleanliness of the lavatories in schools is far from satisfactory and that this affects the urinary and anorectal physiology of little girls. It does not seem necessary to await the results of hypothetical studies concerning the long-term follow-up of those little girls to improve quickly and significantly their quality of life in school.
