ABSTRACT

Female genital prolapse is a functional pathology associated with various symptoms, including pelvic pressure, vaginal bulge, urinary or anal incontinence, voiding difficulties, defecatory disorders and sexual dysfunction. These symptoms are responsible for an altered quality of life, which can include real anxiodepressive syndromes. Women suffering from genital prolapse experience loss of confidence, feel less physically and sexually attractive, feel less feminine and have a poor self-image. A woman who suffers from genital prolapse generally has 3 or 4 expectations: she hopes to cure urinary and colorectal troubles and return to normal activities, improving general health, self-image and social relationships. Because of these complex interactions, management of this disorder has naturally become multidisciplinary. Specific instruments should be used to assess symptoms and quality of life related to genital prolapse. Such instruments should enable the physician to correlate symptoms with anatomical disorders, decide between a conservative or surgical approach and evaluate the different therapeutic options. Two self-report specific questionnaires have been recently validated in French: short-forms of the pelvic floor distress inventory (PFDI-20) and the pelvic floor impact questionnaire (PFIQ-7).
