ABSTRACT

Short samples of Nb3Al precursor are heated by Ohm heating. The curves of temperature vs heating time are investigated to study the phase reaction of jelly-roll precursor and in situ powder-in-tube precursor during the rapid heating process. A short constant temperature process occurs at about 2000 ∘C. It is proved that the reaction that generates body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution phase is reversible. For jelly-roll precursor, metallographic images show that no reaction occurs between Nb/Al roll and Nb matrix. Voids and cracks become larger as the precursor is processed for multiple times. For in situ powder-in-tube precursor, Nb and Al powder is not reacted completely. Using smaller original Nb powder and Al powder is good for the formation of BCC solid solution. More... »
