ABSTRACT

Microalgae possess great potential for use as raw materials for biofuel production. The marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum accumulates lipids as its major form of energy storage when grown under specific conditions. This study investigated the effects of salicylic acid (SA) on the accumulation of fatty acids in P. tricornutum in the stationary growth phase. Our results showed that 40 μM SA increased the total fatty acid content accumulation 1.3-fold of the control after 4 days of exposure. The metabolomics data indicated that SA stimulated the fatty acid monostearin, 2-monoolein, monoolein, and methyl palmitoleate to 22.7-, 16.3-, 3.47-, and 3.47-fold of the control, respectively. The results of physiological and gene transcriptional levels revealed that the glycolysis, N assimilation, and fatty acid synthesis pathways were induced by SA treatment and thus accelerated fatty acid synthesis from carbohydrate and N compounds. The SA treatment could be used to optimize biodiesel production. More... »
The SA treatment could be used to optimize biodiesel production.",
