ABSTRACT

Many educators look to naturalism as a tool to create a new learning environment because they believe that it can produce an innovative and revolutionary method in the educational world. In this paper, I examine an Eastern, Ibn Tufail, and Western, Jean Jacque Rousseau, romantic naturalist philosophy. I find a remarkable similarity between their fictional characters. Both Tufail’s Hayy Bin Yaqzan and Rousseau’s Emile aim to answer social, moral, metaphysical and educational questions. In this paper, I investigate these romantic naturalist philosophies to determine how these two philosophers use nature to develop learning theory, create an attractive environment, satisfy spiritual needs, and solve moral issues. Consequently, I closely examine their work to understand their romantic naturalist philosophy, which can be used to improve our own educational methods. More... »
