ABSTRACT

Selected physicochemical properties of two commercial preparations of magnetite were examined. Using a batch-contact technique, their sorption behaviour towards cobalt(II) in Co(NO3)2 solutions spiked with 60Co(NO3)2 radiotracer and with NaNO3 as background electrolyte, was determined. The experimental results, together with calculation of Co(II) species present in the solution, indicated that the sorption of cobalt onto (conditioned) hydrous magnetite proceeded via ion-exchange of CO2+ and/or Co(OH)+ cations for H+ cations on surface ionogenic s-OH groups. The sorption of dissolved molecular cobalt hydroxide {Co(OH)2}diss as {s−O−CO(OH)2} surface complex may also occur. It has been concluded that the surface density of s-OH groups was the same on both samples of magnetite. Previously reported work on a competitive sorption approach to the treatment of ion-exchange equilibria [1] provided qualitative substantiation of the observed behaviour. More... »
