ABSTRACT

Primary traumatically caused defects but also changes of bone integrity due to infections, regularly necessitate segmental resection in the region of the tibial diaphysis. In the lower leg these are very often associated with substantial soft tissue damage. Temporary shortening with successive extension is a common option for preservation of the extremity and gradual restoration of soft tissue integrity and thus form and function. In addition to monolateral fixator systems, intramedullary implants and temporary solutions using plates, ring fixators are the preferred method in septic surgery, whether as a classical Ilizarov fixator or hexapodon.
