ABSTRACT

BackgroundThe myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) have experienced an extensive molecular characterization over the last years.Material and methodsReview of current literature and presentation of own experiences.ResultsImplementation of the SF3B1 mutation in the current WHO classification as a disease-defining parameter is current practice. Moreover, molecular testing is used in the differential diagnostic work-up in cytopenic patients, the prognostication of MDS patients and as a measure to discriminate MDS from myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasia or MDS from acute myeloid leukemia.ConclusionSome of the molecular aberrations provide therapeutic targets for innovative drugs that are under clinical investigation.
