ABSTRACT

The clear knowledge of the location of the supraorbital foramen is essential when performing supraorbital endoscopic surgeries and regional nerve blocks. In this study, we made a detailed analysis of the supraorbital foramen (SOF), supraorbital notch (SON) and supraorbital ridge (SOR) of Egyptian skulls in a comparative study with those of other races and regions. We studied anatomical variations of SOF/SON and SOR in 59 (32males and 27females) adult human skulls bilaterally. All skulls belonged to Egyptian cadavers. The following parameters were used: the distance between the SOF/SON, SOR and the nasal midline; their shape and transverse diameter; as well as the number and location of accessory foramens if they are found by using a metal casting digital vernier caliper. In this study, nine types of combinations were found and the most important features were as follows: 30.51 % had bilateral SON, 18.64 % had bilateral SOF ,11.86 % had a notch on one side and a foramen on the other side, 22.03 % had bilateral SOR and 8.46 % had a ridge on one side and a notch on the other side. Anatomical knowledge of SOF/SON and SOR is important in order to avoid injuring the neurovascular bundle passing through them during anaesthetic or surgical procedures. In Egyptian skulls, SON was observed more frequently compared to the SOF and SOR which might reflect a thermoregulatory adaptation to warm climate. Level of Evidence: Not ratable More... »

26 schema:description The clear knowledge of the location of the supraorbital foramen is essential when performing supraorbital endoscopic surgeries and regional nerve blocks. Level of Evidence: Not ratable
