ABSTRACT

Requirements for the design of bridge steel structures and materials from the viewpoint of fatigue damage and brittle failure resistance, requirements of STN and EN standards as well as special requirements according to tender documentation are described. Determination of required toughness of steels and weld metals by fracture mechanics approaches, required KVR impact energy for fabrication quality inspection, selection of welding consumables, and determination of preheat temperatures in welding, as well as general requirements on design of bridge details are outlined. Steels used for the carrying parts of the bridge structure, together with their chemical composition and mechanical properties, are mentioned based on statistical data analysis from the plate certificate. The plates of normalized S355NL steels and thermomechanically rolled S355ML and S420ML steels are compared. Properties of plates at loading in the thickness direction are given. The tests for the weld procedure qualification record — WPQR, and the tests of resistance against brittle fracture in agreement with tender documentation are described.
