ABSTRACT

Based on observations in ten pre-schools in Taipei in 1982, social-emotional behaviours are described within the categories of teacher-child interactions, display of emotions, self-esteem behaviours, responsibility behaviours and children’s peer interactions. Positive behaviours greatly predominate. Compliance is high yet children show few signs of tension, stress or severe constraint. They appear to be interested in and enjoying most activities. These observed behaviours are similar to what has been observed in centers on the Chinese mainland, the main difference being that whereas aggressive behaviour appears almost never on the mainland, in Taiwan children do show some aggression, most of it in the form of play fighting.
