ABSTRACT

The role of NMDA receptors in the central excitatory pathways makes them a privileged research object towards neuromodulatory therapeutics. Pain belongs to the fields of application for this type of new drug therapies. Although its mechanism of action is still relatively misunderstood, dextromethorphan, a reknowned cough medicine, is an old companion to the physician's therapeutic arsenal. Recent experiences point to its fascinating neuromodulatory properties, as well as those of its main metabolite, in animal experimental models of pain. Experimental conditions in man point to the predominance of the main molecule in the prevention of central hyperalgesia. More... »
