ABSTRACT

This paper deals with the cytology of three 10-chromosome species ofBrassica, viz.B. chinensis, B. Rapa andB. pekinensis, and theirF1 hybrids. Among the somatic chromosomes in all the parental forms six principal types are distinguished. At diakinesis and metaphase in all the forms two types of bivalents can be made out, i.e. five large and five small, except inB. Rapa where in some plates a transition is noticed at metaphase. At diakinesis chiasma frequency is worked out in all the parental forms andF1 hybrids except inB. Rapa ×B. chinensis. InB. chinensis ×B. Rapa andB. chinensis ×B. pekinensis meiosis was regular, but in the former fertility was not complete. InB. pekinensis ×B. Rapa occasionally two free univalents were observed and occasionally separation was into 9 and 11 instead of 10 and 10; but the reduction in pollen fertility was small and not necessarily significant. Secondary associations were investigated in all the cases exceptB. chinensis ×B. pekinensis. A high amount of pairing, together with the association between morphologically different chromosomes, strongly suggest some sort of chromosome rearrangements, besides reduplication. This makes it difficult to arrive at any definite conclusion with respect to the primary basic number. More... »
