ABSTRACT

The paper contains a description of 111 strains isolated from various sources, originally identified according to the basic taxonomic properties asCandida albicans. The identification was exactified by assessing the average size of blastospore cells, by the detection of chlamydospores, by tests on agar with phosphomolybdic acid and by the serological test. Typical strains ofCandida albicans can be differentiated according to blastospore size into 3 morphological groups, the most extensive being the middle one, with average length of blastospores equal to 4.24 μ. The group of strains with small blastospores of a verage length equal to 3.63 μ has practically round blastospores the group with large blastospores of average length 5.04 μ has elongated blastospores. In addition to typicalCandida albicans strains some were found which resemble the speciesCandida stellatoidea andCandida tropicalis, and some serologically negative species. More... »
