ABSTRACTA large number of accessions ofSolanum demissum and otherSolanum species maintained in the Commonwealth Potato Collection in Great Britain and by the Potato Introduction Station in U.S.A., were screened for resistance to potato races1,2,3; 1,2,4; 1,3,4; 2,3,4 and1,2,3,4 ofPhytophthora infestans. The results indicate that one or more unidentified R genes, different from the four now recognized, are present in the collection. In addition, very high levels of polygenic resistance were encountered making clear-cut genetic segregations difficult to obtain. Accessions in which all of the individuals were resistant to the above five races are as follows: —S. demissum, P.I. numbers 160221-3, 161149-2, 161154m, 161175-2, 161175-4, 161176-2, 161179-1, 161179-5, 161181-7, 161725-1, 161729-1, 161732-1, and CPC numbers 20.1, 27.3, 47, 1342.2, 1346.1, 1364.3, 2095.3, 2097.1, 2098.3, 2102.1, 2127, 2168 and 2318;S. polydenium PI 161728;S. pinnatisectum CPC 2301;S. stoloniferum CPC 28.4. Other species with highly resistant accessions wereS. bulbocastanum, S. guerreroense, S. oxycarpum, S. polyadenium, S. polytrichon,S. spectabile andS. verrucosum. The accessions of these latter species segregated for resistance. InS. demissum accessions PI 161179-3 and CPC 8.4, all or nearly all individuals were susceptible to all races. More... »
