ABSTRACT

Processing technology using the laser beam is a new technology that is expected to be actively introduced into production lines. This paper discusses the merits of CO2 laser processing compared to low density energy processing that uses gas flames, plasmas and arcs, and other high temperature heat sources, such as electron beams and electrical discharge machines (EDM)s. Features and characteristics of CO2 laser cutting and cutting examples are covered. A new cutting technique with high precision, high efficiency, and clean cutting is introduced along with cutting of aluminum alloy materials. Penetration data of laser welding and a discussion of porosities is presented. Surface modification, demonstrated by hardening of cast iron, and a newly developed ceramic coating method are described. More... »
