ABSTRACT

Improvement of the surface of materials to bring about desirable properties may be achieved by laser surface alloying. After a brief review of the mechanisms of formation of surface alloys by the addition of specific elements and laser melting, different examples are reported, namely:Improvement of mechanical surface properties of aluminum base alloys by the electrodeposition of nickel coatings followed by laser treatment.Improvement of the thermal fatigue lifetime of low carbon steels; a nickel coating is first obtained by plasma spraying.Improvement of mechanical properties of iron base alloys by powder injection of tungsten particles. Improvement of mechanical surface properties of aluminum base alloys by the electrodeposition of nickel coatings followed by laser treatment. Improvement of the thermal fatigue lifetime of low carbon steels; a nickel coating is first obtained by plasma spraying. Improvement of mechanical properties of iron base alloys by powder injection of tungsten particles.
