ABSTRACT

We propose a method to derive self-eonsistenoy conditions which have to be satisfied by second-order perturbative QCD and which stem from very general properties of the vacuum polarization, when the experimental data on e+e- annihilation are realistically taken into account. The method provides at the same time correlation curves relating the values of the running heavy-quark masses to those of the running coupling constant. The results indicate a satisfactory self-consistency of the theory at second perturbative order; however, if « conventional » values of the heavy-quark masses are to be reproduced, the required value of the running coupling constant has to be somewhat larger than that of standard derivations.
